Stefano Giovannoni

By Nick Weed

Stefano Giovannoni believes that design is a careful balance between logic and intuition. His designs are influenced by comics, science fiction and his own imagination with his works for Alessi being one of the more notable examples. He views the quality of a product is directly proportional to appeal of the product in the market and Giovannoni emphasizes the importance understanding the culture and time that the designer finds him/herself in. Knowing these elements will lead to a better understanding of what will make a successful designer – the market. Giovannoni has made his career by understanding the market in which he designs for and adds elements of emotion and communication into his designs. His products, such as the Merdolino toilet brush for Alessi, has elements of fun incorporated into the designs and carries a “form follows fun” module.
