The Late Roman Mausoleum of Constantina

Located along the Via Nomentana, this Mausoleum is dedicated to St. Agnese, a 12 year old martyr. Canonized and a symbol of purity, St. Agnese was protected by a number of miracles before be beheaded in the Stadium of Domitian for rebuking the advances of Procop, son of a Roman prefect. Constantina, the daughter of Roman Emperor Constantine, commissioned the construction of a basilica at the site of St. Agnese’s tomb. The complex includes the Mausoleum, Sant’Agnese Fuori le Mura as well as the catacombs underneath the buildings.
