Ospedale degli Innocenti

by Jonathan Lo & Jacqueline Savory

Designed by Brunelleschi, the Ospedale deli Innocenti was an orphanage where abandoned children were admitted and taken care of. The building is a prime example of Early Renaissance architecture based on the proportional relationships between its structural elements towards the unification of parts. Brunelleschi adapted this approach from ancient Rome architecture into his time and the context of Firenze. The orphanage, now a cultural center, also houses many artworks by famous artists, including Domenico Ghirlandaio’s Adoration of the Magi.
