Opera + La Scala in Milan

By Jacqueline Savory & Nick Weed

Completed in 1776, La Scala opera house has been a key cultural building in not just Milan, but in Italy’s history. During the period before Riorgimento, music and opera were used as a means to communicate the building nationalism among Italians. First led by Guiseppe Verdi, the use of this medium to connect with the general population was elevated by Giacomo Puccini with operas such as Madame Butterfly and La Boheme.
