Brunelleschi + Perspective

By Alice Chen & Celeste Pang

With the birth of the Renaissance came a shift from emphasis on content and symbolism to illusion and reality. The potential of art in perspective intrigued artists but many struggled with applying its concepts even after Brunelleschi discovered one-point perspective in 1413. Masaccio’s Trinity is one of the few that successfully implemented perspective. It was not until Leon Battista Alberti published Della Pittura in 1436, a treatise exploring the concepts of point, line, and plane. Brunelleschi and other architects would then begin experimenting with proportions and illusion in buildings such as Santo Spirito, Palazzo Medici, and Palazzo Rucellai.
