Alessandro Mendini

By Andrew Nip

Considered one of the maestri of Italian design, Alessandro Mendini believes that innovation can only occur if designs bid farewell to consistency. Mendini perceives consistency as a prison, one that limits the exploration of the possibilities. In order to stay relevant, designers and designs must not dwell on past achievements but instead constantly push boundaries in order to stay relevant. One of the ways in which Mendini accomplishes this is through collaboration in his work such as the Napoli subway stations and the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands.
